16th Annual $100 Film Festival

The 16th Annual $100 Film Festival wrapped up on Saturday, March 15 and was a complete success! The audiences were amazing, with higher attendance this year and lots of great feedback; the films were stellar and we had the pleasure of hosting several visiting filmmakers.

CSIF 6 Month How to Make a Film Workshop

The Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers is offering nine filmmakers the opportunity to participate in an intensive five month, hands-on filmmaking workshop. Throughout this workshop Participants will develop, write, shoot, direct and edit their own 5-6 minute 16mm film.

Circle of the Sun.
1960. Canada. Directed by Colin Low. A documentary of a young Kainai man, Pete Standing Alone, who is our guide to his life as a typical young member of the Blood Tribe in 1960. He talks about his life and thoughts while he attends the traditional Sun Dance ritual, which is part of his people's struggle to keep their heritage alive. 30 min.

KAINAYSSINI IMANISTAISIWA: The People Go On.
2003. Canada. Directed by Loretta Todd. Windswept prairies, sloping coulees and stretches of open sky – this is the home of the Kainai Nation, in the heart of southern Alberta. Filmmaker Loretta Todd takes viewers on a visually lush journey, exploring the significance of land, memory and knowledge in Kainai life.
The catalyst for this expressionistic journey is the return of belongings of the Kainai, collected by Europeans during colonial times and kept in distant museums. As the community’s elders examine the objects and share stories first hand, they reveal how the rich threads of kainai life thrive from one generation to the next. 70 min.

Stryker. 2004. Canada. Directed by Noam Gonick. Winnipeg, Manitoba, has one of the world’s largest aboriginal populations. In this gritty and often violent feature, activist-filmmaker Gonick partnered with celebrated cinematographer Ed Lachman to vividly dramatize the explosive underbelly of that Canadian city’s Native community. Stryker, a fourteen-year-old fugitive arsonist from the Brokenhead First Nation reserve, becomes a pawn in the ongoing war between the Indian Posse and the Asian Bomb Squad. 85 min.

Gang Aftermath. 2006. Canada. Directed by Francis Campbell. A documentary film exploring the issue of Canadian street gangs from an Aboriginal perspective. With insights from current and former gang members, Gang Aftermath takes a no-holds-barred look at gang culture and lifestyle. Gang intervention and prevention programs are portrayed along with the journey of one individual who is determined to get out and stay out. Gang Aftermath dispels the myths and lays bare the truth about the inner workings of street gangs in Canada. 48 min.

The Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers is offering nine filmmakers the opportunity to participate in an intensive five month, hands-on filmmaking workshop. The workshop will be taught in a Student/Mentor style where students have direct access to professional Artist/Filmmakers as they progress throgh the filmmaking process.

FLOW is a collaboration between TRUCK and the CSIF. Presenting 4 visual artists and 15 media artists from around the world. The work represents a diverse interpretation of the theme; touching on political systems, paths, science, nature, the body, time, history and a little bit of humor. Running the month of June at TRUCK is an exhibition of 4 visual artists works based on the shared themes of FLOW with an opening reception on Friday, June 2.

The Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers 14th Annual $100 Film Festival

The $100 Film Festival supports the media arts community by providing a unique venue for the exhibition of independent film. The Festival screens an eclectic mix of Super 8 and 16mm films from local, national and international filmmakers. While the budgetary limit of $100 has long been dropped, the focus remains on showcasing films made in the spirit of low-budget filmmaking.

Mountain Standard Time Performative Art Festival with scum de terre and the Nihilist Spasm Band

The Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers is proud to host an unparalleled musical experience with scum de terre and the Nihilist Spasm Band as part of M:ST’s Performative Audio Series.

Calgary’s own scum de terre brings their performative free improv antics on the road with their Squeaks Forever Tour. Each episode of the tour plays tribute to the many people who have influenced them.

For the past 35 years, the Nihilist Spasm Band has pioneered their experimental noise-music into a huge international following. This performance marks their first ever appearance in Alberta.

M:ST is a biennial performative art festival, supported by the collaborative efforts of several southern Alberta arts organizations, that brings together a wide range of artists from all experience levels, backgrounds and disciplines.

The Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers $100 Film Festival encourages new & experienced filmmakers to exhibit their short films. The festival is becoming one of the few festivals in Canada to screen only Super 8 and 16mm films as more festivals now allow digital formats. With its emphasis on screening Super 8 and 16mm film, the $100 Film Festival will continue to be a unique boutique festival that attracts the best of filmmakers from all over the world. The Festival provides audiences with an eclectic mix of drama, animation, comedy and experimental films, and also remains one of the few venues for first-time local filmmakers to exhibit their work. The $100 Film Festival is funded through community and corporate sponsorship as well as ticket sales. It pays screening fees to artists as well as cash awards in the categories of Best of Alberta, Best Super 8 Film, Best Animation, Best 16mm, Best First Film, Audience Favorite and a Jury Award. A panel of selected artists and community members choose all awards except for the Audience Favorite. The festival receives submissions from Calgary, across Canada, and internationally, especially in Europe where the tradition of Super 8 filmmaking is still quite strong. We will be publicized through local television, radio, and print. The festival draws over 1000 filmgoers each year, advancing CSIF's mandate of exhibiting filmmakers work to audiences.

Toronto Filmmakers Rick Palidwor and Mitch Perkins will be visiting Calgary to screen their film Sleep Always - A noirish psychological journey where reality and fantasy collide in the labyrinthian corridors of obsession.
